Nonno's Table
It started at a small wooden table in Sicilia. My Nonno — a man of few words and infinite dignity — would sit with his friends every Sunday after church, cards in hand, a glass of wine nearby. He never played to win money. He played because that table was where men were honest.
Watching him, I learned that the way a man handles a hand of cards tells you everything. His patience under pressure. His composure in uncertainty. His grace when he won — and especially when he lost. These were not lessons taught. They were absorbed, hand by hand, game by game.
When he passed, he left me three things: his rosary, his watch, and a worn deck of Modiano cards. The Denari — the coins — were his favourite suit. He said a man's true currency was never what was in his pocket, but what was in his character.
